Because tire balancing is a low-cost service, the difference may be negligible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The mechanic providing the service.<\/strong> You can usually expect to pay more if you get your tires balanced through a dealership than if you go to a national tire chain, warehouse store or independent shop. You\u2019ll usually pay less if you go to the same provider where you purchased and installed your tires.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tire-balancing\">What is tire balancing?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s difficult to manufacture a perfectly round tire, and any irregularities in their construction will cause the wheel to shake or wobble at higher speeds. When you buy a set of tires it is routine to have each tire balanced to correct these small imperfections. However, due to wear or harsh driving conditions, one or more tires might need to be rebalanced.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tire balancing is the process of compensating for the weight of each tire on your vehicle, adding small weights to the inside and outside of each wheel to counteract any discrepancies as you drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the weight of your tires and wheels is unbalanced, the car may shake, wobble, bounce or vibrate. Unbalanced tires can reduce the grip on the road and cause uneven wear, which makes driving less safe and shortens the life of your tires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To balance your tires, a trained technician will place each wheel-tire combination on a special machine that\u2019s hooked up to a computer. The machine spins your tire and identifies areas where the weight is unbalanced, which tells the tech how much weight to add and where.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once they are done, the tire should spin evenly, both on the machine and your car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If this sounds a lot like fixing a wobbly ceiling fan in your house, that\u2019s because it\u2019s basically the same process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two main types of tire imbalances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Dynamic imbalance <\/strong>is due to unequal weight on both sides of the wheel and tire, causing a side-to-side wobble.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Static imbalance<\/strong> happens when there is a heavier or lighter spot on a tire, causing a vertical bounce as the wheel turns.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Tire imbalance can also be caused by uniformity issues, such as imperfect tread, rotor and axle imbalances or a being mounted onto a wheel incorrectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-often\">How often should you get your tires balanced?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A general recommendation is to get your tires balanced every 6,000 miles or so, which is roughly how often you should be <a href=\"\/car-repair\/estimates\/tire-rotation-cost\/\">rotating your tires<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you begin to feel any vibration through the steering wheel, or through the suspension system, you should have that wheel balanced as soon as possible.
