Here\u2019s what you need to know about switching car insurance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ask your new insurance agent if they can<a href=\"\/car-insurance\/cancel-car-insurance\/\"> cancel your previous policy<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If not, contact your old insurer to cancel, and update the lender if you have one.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Verify that you have no lapse in insurance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ask-new-agent\">Ask your new agent to cancel your policy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you&#8217;re buying a new auto insurance policy, ask the agent if they can help cancel your old plan. Many major insurers won&#8217;t cancel your old policy if you buy directly, but independent agents or brokers may assist.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you buy online, look for cancellation information during signup of your new policy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your new insurer can\u2019t help, contact your current insurer directly to cancel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few things to note:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If your new insurance company requires proof of prior insurance, they may be able to contact your old provider for it, but in some cases you&#8217;ll need to send in the proof of coverage yourself.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It\u2019s always a good idea to request confirmation of your cancellation in writing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you\u2019re financing a car, check with your new insurance company to make sure they\u2019ll inform the lenders of the change in coverage.
