I really don\u2019t want my car insurance to go up\u2014how can I remove an accident from my driving record?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Answer:<\/strong> Unfortunately, you can\u2019t usually remove an accident from your driving record. Your driving record is meant to be an accurate and complete history of your time as a driver. There are a few circumstances in which you may be able to remove an accident, but it\u2019s rare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A car accident typically shows up in two different reports:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Your state driving record:<\/strong> Your <a href=\"\/car-insurance\/what-is-a-motor-vehicle-report\/\">motor vehicle record (MVR)<\/a> is maintained by your state\u2019s Department or Bureau of Motor Vehicles (DMV or BMV) and helps the state keep track of your previous driving infractions. These may include speeding tickets, DUIs and accidents. The report may also include punishments, such as license suspensions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Your Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange (CLUE) report:<\/strong> Any claims related to a car accident will go on your CLUE report and stay there for about seven years. You can\u2019t remove claims from your CLUE report unless they were added by mistake, and as long as your insurer can view the accident, you may have higher-than-average <a href=\"\/car-insurance\/\">car insurance<\/a> rates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"removing-an-accident-driving-record\">How to remove an accident from your driving record<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You may be able to remove an accident from your driving record in a few scenarios:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>If the accident was added in error:<\/strong> If an accident is incorrectly listed on your record, reach out to your state\u2019s DMV. You\u2019ll likely have to file a formal dispute, so be prepared with evidence that supports your claim.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>If you were improperly found at fault: <\/strong>If you believe you were improperly found at fault for an accident, a traffic attorney may be able to help you reopen your case. (If you paid any tickets associated with the accident, you automatically accepted the judgment.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Though you can\u2019t remove an accident that\u2019s on your record legitimately, it may fall off your report after enough time has passed. In some states, accidents\u2014especially less serious ones\u2014come off your driving record in as little as three years; in others, it might take seven or ten years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if you were found at fault for a serious accident that involved fatalities, or if drugs or alcohol were involved, it might stay on your driving record permanently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How long will an accident affect my insurance rates?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, even if an accident remains on your record for ten years, it probably won\u2019t impact your car insurance premiums for the whole time.
